Clinical significance

The anti-HDV assay in serum contributes to the diagnosis of HDV infection, especially high titers can be diagnosed as chronic HDV infection. Anti-HDV-IgG positive in HBsAg-positive patients is a reliable indicator for the diagnosis of hepatitis D, even after the termination of HDV infection for many years. Anti-HDV-IgM positivity indicates acute or recent HDV infection, which contributes to the early diagnosis of the disease and distinguishes between HBV and HDV infections or overlapping infections. At the same time, transient anti-HDV-IgM often appeared, and then anti-HDV-IgG appeared or not; anti-HDV-IgM increased continuously with overlapping infection, accompanied by anti-HBV-IgG positive, symptoms worsened, and the prognosis was poor.


HDV itself is not infected and can only be infected with HBsAg-positive people. HDVAg is highly antigenic and can stimulate the body to produce IgG and IgM antibodies. These antibodies are non-neutralizing antibodies and have no protective effect on the body.
